History
1865
Fred T Jane, founder of Jane's was born.
John Frederick Thomas Jane (also known as Fred T) was a naval author, a journalist, a novelist and the founder of Jane’s publishing. He is also linked with the founding of MI5 (UK equivalent of the CIA).
1898
At seventeen he conceived the idea of a warships sketchbook entitled Ironclads of the World.
Seven years later, in 1898, the first edition of Jane’s Fighting Ships appeared.
1909
In 1909, only five years after the Wright Brothers' first flight, Fred T published the first edition of what was to become Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft.
1959
Sixty years after Fred T. first published Jane’s Fighting Ships, Jane’s World Railways was launched in 1959.
1984
Jane's Defence Weekly first launched.
1989
Jane’s published over 200 titles in print and first began producing a range of CD-ROM libraries in 1989.
1991
During 1991, Jane’s began to offer a consultancy service providing clients with market studies tailored to their individual needs. This service is known today as Jane’s Strategic Advisory Services and offers bespoke information in the form of Corporate Services and Government and Public Policy.
1995
The Jane’s website, www.janes.com was successfully launched in 1995.
1997
In 1997 Jane’s began to offer integrated data feeds for secure network environments known today at Jane’s Data Service.
2003
In 2003 Jane’s launched the first of its online ‘Intelligence Centres’ – Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre’ the single most comprehensive and authoritative source of the latest global terrorism-related information.
2005
Jane's Defence Forecasts - Military Aircraft Programmes launches.
